Cristiano Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to win his fourth Balon d’Or.
The 31-year-old forward has had probably the most successful year of his career, winning the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, and the Euros with Portugal, in that memorable final where he shook off his injury to spur Portugal on to victory against France.
Antoine Griezmann fired Atletico Madrid and France to the finals of the UCL and Euros respectively, but was bested by Ronaldo’s teams on both occasions.
While Lionel Messi, who still holds the record for the most Balon d’Ors (five) helped Barcelona win the domestic double, but lost his chance at an international title when his misfired penalty helped Chile win the Copa America.
Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, helped Real Madrid win their eleventh European trophy, scoring a record eleven goals in the group stage also. With his fourth Balon d’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo now boasts the title of the most successful European player ever, beating the likes of Zidane, Cryuff, and Platini.
